A vitamin A alcohol retinoid that is enzymatically converted in skin to retinaldehyde and then retinoic acid, supporting epidermal renewal, collagen-related matrix activity, smoother texture, and visible anti-aging performance.

In a randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study, topical 0.4% retinol applied up to three times weekly for 24 weeks improved fine wrinkles in naturally aged skin and was associated with increased glycosaminoglycan and procollagen I expression.

It is best used in night creams, anti-aging serums, renewal treatments, and texture-refining products, usually with barrier-support ingredients such as niacinamide, ceramides, panthenol, or hyaluronic acid to improve tolerance.
